What, you don’t want to read all the details of my life to get a few morsels of useful information? In a way, I applaud you. Not only for not enabling my narcissism, but also for encompassing the spirit of simplicity and getting the facts you need to live a life of voluntary simplicity without all the fluff…and here I’ve already gone and gotten long-winded. Fine. Here’s the meat.
Tips on productivity from “More Work, Less Time”
- Listen better – don’t just wait to talk when co-workers are speaking
- Complete your most dreaded tasks first thing in the morning
- Get offline by holding a meeting instead of sending an email, or handwriting documents
- Set a time to do something the minute you remember you have to do it
- Prioritize your tasks first thing in the morning, and set a timer for completing tasks
- Take short exercise and social breaks throughout the day
- Never have anything in your inbox – make emails with action items in them into events on your calendar if you can’t deal with them right away
- Don’t work too much
Tips on getting rid of things you don’t need from “Whining and Pitching”
- Schedule time for de-clutterizing, and tell people about it so you’ll be held accountable.
- Things don’t have emotions. You have emotions about things. Find another way to preserve the emotions you want to keep so that you don’t have to keep so much stuff.
- If it’s not worth your time and money, donate it or throw it away.
- Make a deal with yourself – like putting the items in question in a box and setting a date on the calendar that you’ll donate the items if they haven’t been used.
- Check out The House That Cleans Itself book or blog by Mindy Starns Clark for tips on de-clutterizing and having a simpler, cleaner home.
- Find some inspiration by remembering those who aren’t so fortunate to have things they don’t need.
